Research Projects

  • PhD

In Fall 2025, I began my PhD journey at Concordia University in Montreal, QC. I am interested in exploring the intersections of media, educational policy, and schooling.

In particular, I hope to explore the ways anti-gender rhetoric in media manifests in education policy, and ultimately, youth and educator classroom experiences in the Canadian context. My goal would be to develop a study that comparatively examines these experiences in two provinces, Quebec and Alberta, using participatory arts-based methods to highlight the diversity of participant experiences.

  • MA Thesis

In 2025, I completed my MA in Education & Society at McGill University in Montreal, QC. I conducted a research project titled “Catholic Policies & Parental Rights: Impacts on 2SLGBTQ+ and Allied Youth and Educators in Alberta’s Publicly Funded Catholic Schools” supervised by Dr. Jayne Malenfant.

Using an institutional ethnographic approach, my thesis examined the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ and allied educators and recent graduates from Alberta’s secondary Catholic schools regarding their experiences with advocacy and visibility in religious schooling, and their responses to Alberta’s Education Amendment Act (2024), part of which requires parental consent for the use of preferred names and pronouns in schools for students aged 15 and under, and parental notification for those ages 16-17.

To investigate this focus, I conducted interviews with 13 participants: 10 educators and 3 recent graduates. Additionally, I conducted a textual analysis of religious documents, and provincial and federal legislation to trace how such texts shape the realities and decisions of youth and educators.

I converted my thesis into an accessible digital zine. It is my belief that research, especially in education, needs to be accessible and available to those working in schools and policy. Read it under the “Dissemination” section.
